Embarking on your first solo trip abroad is an exciting and empowering experience. It is an opportunity for you to discover new cultures, many adventures, personal growth, self discovery and unforgettable memories. However, planning your first trip can feel overwhelming. Before you even start the planning process you first need to figure out what kind of traveler you are. Do you want to travel on a budget and backpack, staying in hostels or do you value more luxurious experiences and accommodation. Are you a nature lover or a city gal? Once you decide what you want from a trip and of course your budget, the planning process can begin. This guide will help you to prepare for a smooth and enjoyable journey.
1. Choose the right destinationHow to get around Penang and Georgetown
Picking the right destination is very important and the key to a successful first trip. Consider the following factors when making your choice:
Tip: Before I travel to a new destination I always check the Department of Foreign affairs travel advice section to get updates on the country I am going to. It is very easy to use and provides information not only on safety and security measures but also laws and customs, health updates and embassy details if you need to contact someone.
2. Research and plan ahead
Before booking any trip it is important to do thorough research as this can make a significant difference to your travel experience. Look up the best neighborhoods to stay in, the local customs, transportation options and popular attractions. I also research the best restaurants in the areas I am going to. You can read blogs, forums and guidebooks to gather insights from other solo female travelers. I tend to create boards on pinterest and instagram to save unique places in countries I would like to visit that I can return to later.
Tip: Use google maps to star places of interest so it is easier to find once you are at your destination.
3. Create a flexible Itinerary
Having an itinerary provides structure but also allows room for spontaneity. I like to plan roughly how many days I will stay in each place and will make a list of things to do in each area and restaurants to try. I always make time for relaxation, self care and discovering other places I didn’t even know about.
Tip: Don’t be too focused on getting to see and do everything as you will get burnt out, go with the flow and you never know what you might experience along the way.
4. Book accommodation in advance
Always, always secure your accommodation before you arrive at a new destination especially if you are traveling in high season or there is a place you really want to stay. Booking in advance gives you peace of mind especially if you arrive late. Look for accommodation with good reviews especially from other solo travelers, check the location so it is close to public transport and attractions you might want to see. Accommodation options are endless but for some added safety and security you can book female only dorms in hostels if you want to make friends or even a private room in a hostel is a good option too. Hotels provide extra comfort, privacy and have the added extras like a gym if you want one or try Airbnb for unique experiences and stays with local hosts and of course always check reviews before booking!
Tip: Use booking platforms like booking.com that offer free cancellation in case your travel plans change.
5. Pack light and smart
Depending on what kind of a trip you are going on whether it is an all inclusive holiday or a budget backpacking trip you are going to have to carry your own luggage! That is one of the downsides to traveling solo however by packing light it makes it much more manageable. Bring versatile clothing that suits the climate, activities you will be doing and of course the local customs. Essentials include a good pair of walking shoes, a travel sized first aid kit, toiletries, any necessary medications and important documents, don’t forget your passport! Oh and mosquito spray, trust me you will need this!
Tip: For added safety bring a combination lock for staying in hostels as they usually have lockers for your belongings and a personal safety alarm.
6. Stay connected
Ensure you have ways to stay connected and safe while traveling. Keep your family informed of your travel plans by sharing your itinerary, contact details and accommodation information. Consider using a local sim for longer stays in destinations, an Esim or an international phone plan. Always make sure you have data for maps, using local taxi apps and whatsapp as most people use this to communicate. Use apps that you can share real time information and location with your contacts.
Tip: Research & purchase Esims or phone plans before you go to ensure you are connected once you land in your next destination.
7. Prepare important documents
Be sure to check your passport is valid for at least 6 months beyond your travel dates and check it is in good condition as some countries are very strict. In the event your dog has chewed it or it ended up in the washing machine you may be denied entry to your country of choice. Check the visa requirements before you leave. Some countries have visa on arrival whereas others now have an e visa you need to apply for online before you travel. Make copies of your passport, visa, travel insurance and any other important documents you may need for your trip. It is also a good idea to save digital copies in case you need them and bring some extra passport photos, you never know when you might need them!
8. Get travel insurance
Travel insurance is a must for solo travelers. It covers unexpected events like medical emergencies, trip cancellations or lost luggage. Choose a policy that offers comprehensive coverage, including emergency medical evacuation. Always read the policy and remember cheap insurance is not always the best option!
Tip: Nomads can get nomad insurance and add extra coverage for electronics. The one I always use is Safety Wing. You pay by the month and can cancel anytime, perfect for people who travel a lot throughout the year.
9. Learn basic phrases
Learning a few key phrases in the local language can be incredibly helpful. Even in today’s world where lots of people can speak English, you will find the locals very appreciative of you trying to communicate with them. Phrases like “hello”, “thank you”, “excuse me” and “help” can go a long way in making communications smoother.
Tip: Download a translator app before you go as it might come in handy when you least expect it.
10. Stay safe
Prioritize your safety by staying alert and trusting your instincts. Avoid sharing your travel plans with strangers and keep your valuables secure. Be cautious when accepting food or drinks from strangers. Familiarize yourself with the local emergency numbers and know where to go in case of an emergency. Remember your intuition is a powerful tool. If something doesn’t feel right, trust your gut and remove yourself from the situation. Always prioritize your safety and well being.
Tip: Don’t wear flashy jewelry when traveling, leave it at home. You can always buy lovely handmade pieces from locals and at night markets.
11. Plan your transportation
Before visiting a new destination it is a good idea to also research the transportation options as it will make getting around much easier. Understanding public transportation, taxi services and ride sharing apps before you go can be a lifesaver. Also pre download the apps so you are ready to go. When arriving at a new destination it is a good idea to pre book your airport transfer. Check with your accommodation if they offer that service, some have a free shuttle service others charge a small fee. If you are arriving at night it is always a better idea to book your transfer with your accommodation. This will ensure a safe and reliable transfer upon arrival.
12. Budget wisely
Create a realistic budget for your trip, including accommodation, food, transportation and activities. It is always a good idea to keep some emergency funds separate as you never know if and when you might need them. Using a travel app can help you to track your expenses and manage your budget effectively.
Tip: Only carry enough cash for the day when you are out exploring to help you to stick to your budget.
13. Stay healthy
Research health advisories for your destination and any vaccines you may need. Before any trip I always make sure to visit the tropical medical bureau to update my travel vaccines and get any prescription medicines needed. Stay hydrated, pack electrolytes, medicines, eat well and take care of your health throughout your trip. Also stay sun safe, depending on where you travel to, the sun is a lot stronger than in Europe and the last thing you will want is it to end up with sun stroke!
Tip: Always pack a high factor sunscreen and stay out of the sun between 12pm-2pm
14. Be open to new experiences
Solo travel is an opportunity for growth and adventure. It is about embracing the unknown and celebrating your independence. Challenge yourself, be open to new experiences and enjoy every moment. Try local foods, make new friends and explore off the beaten path. Embrace the journey and enjoy the freedom that comes with solo travel.
Planning your first trip abroad can feel daunting, but with careful preparation and a positive mindset it will be one of the most rewarding experiences of your life. So pack your bags, trust in your abilities and get ready to get lost on a journey that will transform you and your life in ways you never knew possible.
Happy travels!
